I’m going to answer a few questions about arthritis/ joint pain and how to overcome it which I hope might be helpful to you. Q. From what you’ve just said, not all types of joint pain are due to arthritis. That’s right. There are two major types of arthritis – osteo and rheumatoid. Osteo-arthritis is extremely common, being a wear-and-tear disease. Rheumatoid arthritis is less common and seems to be associated with a faulty immune system. There are other associated conditions like ankylosing spondylitis and gout, but some joint pain is caused simply by inflammation and has nothing specifically to do with arthritis. Q. So what else causes joint pain? There’s a whole string of possibilities, starting with an imbalance of minerals like calcium and magnesium in the body, or a lack of Vitamin D to help the uptake of calcium. Too much red meat, dairy products and animal fats in the diet cause inflammatory processes, as does a lack of essential fatty acids from oily fish and seeds. Stress and alcohol both block the conversion of essential fatty acids into anti-inflammatory substances, and nasty inflammatory molecules called free radicals can enter the synovial fluid which surrounds our joints when the diet is not nutritious enough to provide antioxidants. Q. Is it possible that food sensitivities can cause joint pain? Absolutely. Several clinical trials have shown a link between food sensitivities and rheumatoid arthritis, in particular, but they can also cause inflammation in a non-arthritic joint. Q. In your experience, have you found one factor which is a more common cause of joint pain than anything else? Yes, I have. There’s an extremely common condition called yeast infection, or Candidiasis. It’s an overgrowth of the common yeast, Candida albicans, and it’s reckoned that it affects one in three people in the Western world to a greater or lesser extent. It causes all sorts of problems, both physical and mental, and it releases a great many toxins into the bloodstream (no less than 79 have been identified), and among other things these toxins can inflame the joints. In addition, the toxins seem to make a bee-line for any traumatised tissue in the body, so if you have at any time injured a knee or a shoulder or elbow, it is likely to become more painful as a result of having a Candida overgrowth in your body. So, in my experience, a great many people suffering from joint pain, whether or not they have arthritis, might be surprised to see how their symptoms improved if they were to follow a nutritional anti-candida regime. Three notable doctors who have specialist interest in yeast infection (Dr. Orian Truss, Dr. William Crook and Dr. Ralph Golan) have written in their books that symptoms which can be either caused by or associated with yeast overgrowth include arthritis, joint stiffness, joint swelling and joint pain. Q. So what would you say to someone who is looking for answers to any type of joint pain?
