EATING DISORDERS (ANOREXIA, BULIMIA) Welcome to www.nutritionhelp.com. Did you know that eating disorders can often be helped by Nutritional Therapy? I’m going to answer a few questions about eating disorders which I hope might be helpful to you. Q. Are there different types of eating disorder? Yes. Anorexia nervosa is a form of self-starvation. Bulimia nervosa is a cycle of binge-eating and then purging, either by induced vomiting or by the use of laxatives. Sometimes there is addiction to exercise in an attempt to burn up all the calories that have been eaten during a binge. Sometimes there is a combination of anorexia and bulimia. Q. Are these conditions psychological in origin? Well, that is the common conception but in my clinical experience, as well as in a research project I carried out as part of my training, I came to believe that although there might be a psychological ‘trigger’ involved, the eating disorder would not have happened if there had not already been an underlying physical condition preparing the way for it. Q. What sort of underlying physical conditions are you talking about? For instance, a girl going through puberty uses a tremendous amount of zinc in the processes of growing and maturing. But if she has been living on a poor diet consisting mainly of crisps and sweets, almost no zinc will have been entering her body – and zinc is needed to give us an appetite. In this scenario, a girl who is zinc-deficient and has no appetite will find it all too easy to decide to stop eating if she then experiences some psychological trauma which triggers a need to take control of her life; anorexia takes hold. On the other hand, someone with an unsuspected food allergy is likely to develop an addiction to that food and experience uncontrollable cravings for it, resulting in episodes of bingeing. This can be followed by guilt and disgust, and an urge to get rid of the food she has just eaten; bulimia takes hold. Q. So from your experience, you don’t believe that counselling is sufficiently helpful? It depends on the type of counselling, but almost certainly counselling alone will not resolve the problem. If zinc is lacking in your nutritional status, you need to take zinc supplements. If your body is severely lacking in protein, you need amino acid supplements. If you are battling with bulimia, it can be a tremendous help to pinpoint specific foods which you are craving and to which you probably are allergic. Other causes of bingeing include low blood sugar and an overgrowth of yeast known as Candida albicans. Though counselling might help to resolve any negative issues in the mind, it cannot provide the body with the nutrients it so badly needs in order to work efficiently. Only Nutritional Therapy can do that. Q. What can you tell us about amino acid supplements? I learned a great deal from lectures and books by Dr. Robert Erdmann. His own experience in treating eating disorders with amino acids was a revolutionary approach. When I followed his teaching, I found that the outcome was often little short of amazing. Within a few days of taking appropriate amino acid supplements, I have known young women find that their self-perception has totally changed because the brain has received a concentrated form of the nutrients it needed to help it work properly. With a change in self-perception, it becomes possible to see the reality of the situation – that you are actually thin and gaunt rather than obese and disgusting as you had previously thought. The amino acids also gently help to stimulate digestion and encourage the efficient working of hormones, so that periods which had stopped are found to start again. Another benefit of this approach is that there is no immediate increase in appetite leading to a consequent sudden increase in weight – a fear of which is likely to prevent many anorexics/bulimics from embarking on the regime. Q. So what would you say to someone who knows they are suffering from either anorexia or bulimia, even if they have never admitted it to anyone before? If you haven’t considered it before, you may well find that appropriate Nutritional Therapy could be very helpful.
