HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE (HYPERTENSION)

Welcome to www.nutritionhelp.com.

Did you know that high blood pressure can often be helped by Nutritional Therapy? In my clinical practice, I have seen it happen time and time again - and now you can receive tailor-made advice online from www.nutritionhelp.com!

My name is Erica White. I’m Nutritional Director of Nutritionhelp, and also a Fellow of the Institute for Optimum Nutrition and an Honorary Fellow of the British Association for Applied Nutrition and Nutritional Therapy. I have now retired from clinical practice, but we have set up an online Questionnaire and Report system which can give you all the advice you need, with an optional facility to have contact with one of our associate team of qualified Nutritionists.

I’m going to answer a few questions about high blood pressure which I hope might be helpful to you.

Q. What exactly is blood pressure?

It is the pressure caused by the pumping motion in the arteries, and is a useful way to monitor cardiovascular health. Two figures are recorded. The top figure (the systolic pressure) is the pressure in the blood vessels when the heart contracts and pumps the blood. The bottom figure (the diastolic pressure) is the pressure when the heart relaxes.

Q. So what is high blood pressure?

When the heart has to pump extra hard and is less able to relax, both the systolic and diastolic pressures will be higher than in a healthy situation. Doctors believe that it is normal for blood pressure to rise with age, but Nutritionists believe that it only rises because the situation has become less healthy over the years, and that this has nothing directly to do with the ageing process. In other words, it is possible for a 70 year old man with a healthy cardiovascular system to have exactly the same blood pressure as when he was 20.

Q. What are the figures which suggest that blood pressure is too high?

Blood pressure is taken either with a sphygmomanometer that gives a mercury reading, or with a digital instrument. 120/80 (or lower) is a healthy blood pressure reading. 140/90 suggests that the situation is in need of attention. Anything higher than this is regarded as high blood pressure.

Q. What causes blood pressure to rise?

There are three major factors. a) the blood has become too thick and sticky, b) the arteries have become blocked and narrowed with a build-up of fatty deposits, and c) the artery walls have become hardened and lost their elasticity. Any or all of these situations make it more difficult for the heart to pump blood through the arteries. Eventually, they can lead to a heart attack or a stroke because insufficient blood is able to get through to carry oxygen to the heart or the brain, so it’s important that the situation should not be ignored.

Q. So then the doctor prescribes some blood pressure pills. Isn’t that all that’s required?

It depends on whether you are happy to take pharmaceutical drugs for the rest of your life, because these medications do nothing to cure the situation; they simply control it.

Q. Does Nutritional Therapy have anything better to offer?

In almost every situation I have seen, appropriate Nutritional Therapy has been able to lower the blood pressure readings – and it does it by tackling the root causes. Blood that’s too thick can be made less sticky, fatty deposits can be broken down, and artery walls can have their elasticity restored. Very many doctors have been surprised at the results seen in their patients who have been following nutritional advice, and have been happy to stop the prescribed medication. Previously high blood pressure then remains normal provided you determine to eat a healthier diet than you did before!

Q. What would you say to someone who is currently having to live with high blood pressure and taking medication for it?

If you haven’t considered it before, you may well find that appropriate Nutritional Therapy could be very beneficial in helping your body to overcome high blood pressure. It is perfectly safe to take nutritional supplements for this purpose at the same time as continuing your prescribed medication – provided you ask your doctor to check your blood pressure at intervals no longer than a month apart, because the fact that you are tackling the situation in two ways at the same time might mean that your blood pressure comes down faster than your doctor is expecting, and he might then want to take you off your medication. However, you should never stop medication except with your doctor’s guidance. And of course, we can make no claims for you as an individual, but we can say that many people have seen significant improvement.

Maybe you would like to register for an online nutritional report. A detailed Questionnaire enables you to be provided with personalised advice based on my clinical experience over nearly twenty years.

Register now for an online Questionnaire on www.nutritionhelp.com. For just £47 you will receive an extremely detailed report giving tailor-made nutritional advice to help you on your road to recovery. Read how the system works on www.nutritionhelp.com/quest_more.php.
